Univerisity of Joensuu's SciFest

SciFest Festival 16-17 April, 2009

I am currently attending a SciFest [Science Festival] in the Sports Arena of the University of Joensuu an event organised by the Department of Computer Science and Statistics. At this event among the many people attending there are two special people I met from Uganda and Ethiopia who had just arrived in the country. This was impressive considering that the event has only been taking place for 3 years or so and it was starting to get some international audience. The festival was modeled after our own Grahamstown SciFest.

Anyway, for this festival I am part of group of foreign students and researchers at the University of Joensuu who have managed to put together an interesting game about an African village [only one hut] and what happens there for recreation. Our game is a made of blocks and is played in groups of 3 or 4. Each group is represented by one person on the grid who throws a dice when a question appears on the screen. If they get the answer correctly they move the same number of steps as indicated by the dice. If the answer is wrong they don't move at all. The last throw will take then into the hut where they will find their price waiting for them.

Hi Thato

We did the Northe South rope pulling yesterday (16th). In Joensuu the team was at the SciFest Joensuu Event arena. In South Africa the team was situated outside my office, halfway in and out of the office. Did you perhaps see it from your end?
